I just reached for a 16 oz jar of pickled beets from "Great value" a Walmart generic brand. Fortunately, I discovered a DEEP PUNCTURE DENT in the side of the metal lid! Pressing on the top "button" it moves rather than being rigid, likewise using a manual can opener to pry up the lid no air sound could be heard!
Was this product damage simply careless packing somewhere or was it done deliberately? Was any substance injected into the gashed opening probably not likely but I will discard the product anyway. The problem is how many hungry consumers particularly (SNAP) recipients like myself would notice this possible health hazard AND GO ABOUT THROWING AWAY their food?
If this product damage was done deliberately and the jar of beets was OPENED purposely to insert a foreign substance how widespread could this ATTACK be occuring in the US FOOD CHAIN since Walmart is the largest grocery chain in the country and many canned, shelf stable foods are distributed to FOOD PANTRIES in every state??
It's worth remembering there's EVEN a partisan divide about FOOD ASSISTANCE especially that from Federal and State dollars including jealousy attacks from those found ineligible for free food!!
This means there may be attacks on food destined or believed to be destined for food banks or likely to be bought by SNAP / EBT beneficiary's such as GENERIC and STORE BRANDS !
Large DCs may be unknowingly sending bad items nationwide?
