In North Carolina if you use a wheelchair & need an ambulance ride EMS will not carry your wheelchair with you to the hospital it remains at your home.
When you are discharged from the hospital and need a wheelchair (unless family delivers your chair to facility!) the hospital will only provide a transport chair to the door.
Either your ride brings YOUR chair for you OR you (the patient) are sent to a REHAB / NURSING HOME to provide you a wheelchair to return home in.
But the length of stay at the REHAB is arbitrarily determined by that facility due to your condition or their available beds (or financial "needs")
So the rehab will not send you to your home until they determine "you are safe there" which could be weeks or months (at insurance expense!)
Then your ride back home is another shell game.
If it is "medically" necessary EMS will bring you home (wheelchair?) if NOT medically necessary patient needs to hire a taxi or a family member (if they have one?)
So in reality a Medicaid patient owning or renting a home alone, discharged from a facility has no way to get transportation home with their wheelchair without paying cash to a cab or an ambulance service!
If patient has no wheelchair at hospital they are automatically sent to a rehab or must walk to a taxi! (taxi may be paid by hospital for return but wheelchair NOT)
Wheelchairs USED TO BE rentable. This provider no longer exists. POOF!
THIS SCAM SYSTEM GUARANTEES MEDICAID/MEDICARE pay for
1) Patient confinement to nursing home.
2) Wheelchair "sold" to patient by facility even if not permanently needed!
3) Transportation home (if patient has enough resources?) by EMS billed to insurance? Possibly at long distance.
4) Indefinite facility confinement (billed to insurance) EVEN THOUGH PATIENT HAS OWN HOME!
Patient vulnerable to home loss?? City expense to maintain, foreclose, sell??
Because patient unable to escape nursing home INSURANCE INCOME - SCAM SYSTEM!
