A lack of housing inventory is said to be the driving factor behind the inert housing market yet when occasionally we do see new construction guess what? The homes are expensive looking McMansions using up scarce land and construction labor!
In the great depression and similar eras society built massive developments of simple starter homes and mill workers housing and there were plenty of eager takers glad to get out of the rain and shelters.
Then later when the economy improved and the market loosened many people in those simple dwellings moved up and out leaving them to others takers. Today's housing emergency needs radical solutions like those to get more Americans under a roof either both as owners and renters!
