My local NPR station constantly tells me that 86% of their financial support "comes from listeners" and that differentiates "Public" radio from private commercial radio stations. But yet every spare minute between sentences a STERN WOMAN comes on to remind me that my local PUBLIC radio is "SUPPORTED BY" a few LISTENERS "AND FROM" three or four PRIVATE COMMERCIAL SPONSORS or PHILANTHROPIC FOUNDATIONS to make up the difference when not enough listeners give financial support AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S previously generous support was strangled to a trickle in the 1990's by the conservative geniuses like NEWT GINGRICH who bring Americans many similar quality of life enhancements such as poor healthcare, shoddy education, and increased air pollution among others.
PUBLIC RADIO COMMERCIALISM IS JUST AS AND SOMETIMES MORE ANNOYING AND MONOTONOUS THAN COMMERCIAL STATION'S ADVERTISING. Even so I continue to suffer through it every day, even during PLEDGE DRIVES (which are still followed by three or four commercials!) because the news and programming is more informative than infotainment media.
MAKE YOUR GIFT RIGHT NOW SO YOU CAN HEAR LESS OF THE "SUPPORTED-BY" .... "AND FROM" LADY's .... FOUR OR FIVE ANNOYING AND MONOTONOUS COMMERCIALS !!!!
The fact is "LISTENERS" support is how public radio stations create RATINGS to sell ADVERTISING SPOTS to commercial sponsors (who're needed to compensate for lack of listener and federal contributions) So "Listener supported" is only partly true or they wouldn't have so many "ADS" But they hate to admit that there's a big fat ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM.
