EVERY TIME I hear the acronym D.O.M.A. mentioned in the news these days I get an urge to smirk, utter a little chuckle and also swallow hard. Why? because of a small,(telling?) irony that a congressional act meant to impose religious morality on a minority (in OUR country) also sounds exactly the same as a vile, mean spirited swear word used by a people from ANOTHER country (now numerous in the United States) who's street slang is probably vaguely, familiar to professionals working in Immigration, the human services and law enforcement as well as some in the media.
So maybe it's why I've heard a few people in the media lately attempting to pronounce this word so as to avoid it sounding LIKE the vernacular, VIETNAMESE curse word ! In-fact, during the mid 1990's, I learned it's meaning, the hard way, while acquainted with some hard-living industrial men here in NC!
This word usually punctuates heavy drinking, gambling, arguing , fist fighting and expressing general hostility. Which in my experience was often a 'subtle' warning NOT to approach a particular apartment, "cafe" or vehicle and... if I knew what's good for me - I'd turn tail and leave - asap!!
Pronounced "DOH-MA" in a falling (deep) then rising tone this common profanity translates roughly the same as it's English equivalent: "MOTHER-F_CKER" AND is loaded with other vial, culture-specific meanings referring to ghosts, rotting relative's corpses etc. etc.
What an appropriate pair!! A mean-spirited POLITICAL ACT posing as "morality" which deliberately deny's love and justice to thousands of people. - AND - a vicious, VULGAR CURSE WORD from an ancient culture!
Therefor at risk of paranormal consequences I'll offer only this to the "Defense Of Marriage Act". DOH-MAHH, DohOOO !!! :(
